Saying Goodbye (4/01/2009)

Lately I have had to let myself let go of winter. I hate summer, scorching 100 degrees of baking sun and gross sticky 80% humidity for 7 months straight. This winter has been a great one, probably the best we have had in years (good for mushers any how). We got several snows, great cold temperatures and I finnally got all my equipment and have found my main team along with several new trails around my area. It's just hard to see it evolve into 60 degree blossoming weather this early.
On another note, I also said 'good-bye' to a former kennel dog, Ceasar. A big burly red boy, Ceasar ran wheel on my team for two seasons and he was the first (and only so far) dog I ever shown. I had been talking with a friend who always loved Ceasar and decided to let him go home with him since he wasnt cutting my main team anymore. They installed new fence, lived right on the beach (drove 7 hours and over 300 miles) and he would share his area with another Siberian, Miah. I had made the decision to home him over a long stretch of time, I needed to slim down to the dogs I mainly run and those who will travel with me to races and runs on distant trails. I can say It was a little tough. I didn't cry; however, but he also was out of my very first siberian litter. Bittersweet I guess.. although I am sure he is very happy because he always kinda looked like a surfer dude to me ;)

We took a camping trip up in Pisgah a few weeks back, which was a load of fun. Ended up working on quick sprint runs with the team because the road was unusually busy that day. Ended up not staying the night though, because I brought mom along and we ran out of firewood and it got REALLY cold, colder than originally expected. We packed up (tent and all after we just pitched it) right as it got dark and stayed at her house. We plan to camp again very soon, and bring lots of firewood this time!
Since it's been getting warmer now, I have switched to just running 2 or so dogs on the bike for the remainder of the 'cooler' days. Calamity and Gloria have both been getting extensive one-on-one leader training with this and it has been very fun working with them both alone. This weekend we finished a 9.5 mile run on the greenway in town.

Other than that, not much has been going on. Rain, rain, rain is all I can really say. I should'nt complain because I know summer will most likely very dry and dusty except for the humidity, and we are still a bit behind from last years severe drought. I do hate feeding and messing with the dogs when its been raining for a few days, though. The kennels always have huge mudholes and the straw and red clay make swamp areas all around the runs. I lay down flake after flake of straw in Waylon and Storm's kennels (because they are the ones usually doing figure 8's and circles in their kennels, making it a huge mudslide) but to no avail because within the next day it is back in the same mess as before.

Anyways, off to do some school. I'm closing it up and hope to graduate before July :)  Hope to check out another campground this weekend with a really cool two way loop trail behind it. Will stay updated.
