Oh my! Certainly has been a while since I've written a post. I've been caught up in quite a mess of things lately but all the time I keep meaning to write another post here. Well.. here I am!
I am officially finished with school! I received my GED in the mail a few weeks ago and was shy a few points from making honors. I will graduate next June with the class of '10, I am stoked!! I also got a certificate for a free curriculum class of my choice. I believe I am going to take a Agriculture/Botany class to give me some extra experience for my career. Hopefully next summer I can start my internship program with the Nat'l Forest, or maybe do a temporary position for a state park. I am very excited.. everything I do comes back to working with nature, my passion. There's nothing in the world like running my dogs out in the forest, just the beauty of it. The pines swaying in the wind, a soft snow falling among moonlight as we cross 'the climb' (referring to a large hill on FR 982 out by the house, our 'stomping grounds' to say).
We've also been taken aback extending the dog yard. We took all of the panels (about 32 I believe, all measure 10' x 6') and extended them all into a 75 x 60 dog yard further back into the woods. I finally got to put up my stakeouts and put use to the new doghouses I built last year. We kept the kennel with the wood floor up on the furthermost left corner, put three stakeouts down the side and put two kennels on the way back right end. In all of that, the areas are much easier to clean, as well as our main problem- NO FLOODING! We had alot of rain this year, causing serious problems in the old kennel setup with lots of flooding and bent poles from rain weight on the tarps. Needless to say, the dogs love their new forest area and I am no longer a fan of tarps!
Other than that, it's been other un-dog related activities. I did manage to squeeze a few runs in here and there but have just been far too busy. I have been battling financial problems as well as helping my mother heal with her broken ankle. I also homed one of my other dogs so currently my kennel is down to 7 dogs, and only one is a non-runner and the other is occasional. It's been a relatively mild summer here, just having a handful of days of sweltering heat, but it's hovered around the mid 80's for most of the days. I've caught glimpse of fallen leaves and felt chilly breezes here and there but I'm not holding my breath on 'that' ;)
I've also lately been really caught in the beauty of the south and why I love it here so much. The hospitality, the old farms and traditions, the way we spend our weekends, the old dirt roads and just generally the breathtaking beauty of it all. Sure we have tough summers, and we don't get much snow at all, but it's just everything else that keeps me here. All of my life I've lived here I always said I wanted to move where there is snow, but now, I'm just not so sure. As of the sport of mushing.. it is growing wonderfully down here. I am very passionate about promoting it and am basking in the light that so much is planned for it. We have a perfect area for a successful dryland circuit and I hope to always be here when it's in it's height!
